J&B Recycling won a multi-million pound contract to manage waste from homes across Hull and East Yorkshire as part of a joint venture J&B Bio Ltd.
J&B Bio successfully tendered to deliver waste management services on behalf of Hull City Council and The East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which covers towns such as Beverley, Goole and Bridlington. The joint venture between J&B Recycling Ltd and Hull-based waste management firm Biowise Ltd was for three ten year contracts that covers the processing of kerbside collected Comingled Recyclable waste and Organic waste
Vikki Jackson-Smith, Managing Director of J & B Recycling, said: “This was a fantastic contract to win and lead to significant growth for J&B Recycling further establishing our expertise to deliver waste management contracts on behalf of local authorities.
The first contract involves the processing of recyclable household materials from approximately 112,000 homes across the City of Hull. The waste amounting to 22,000 tonnes a year, consisting of cans, glass and plastic bottles, newspaper and cardboard, is collected by Hull City Council wagons, bulked up at a transfer station in Hull and is then collected by J&B Bio and for sorting at J&B Recycling.
In this waste stream for the period April–June 2017 the overall amount of “target” material recycled increased by 4.99% compared to the same quarter in 2015. The level of waste in their kerbside recycling fell by 1.87% over the same period.
Doug Sharp, assistant head of waste and open spaces at Hull City Council, said: "Hull City Council are midway through a 10 year contract with J&B Recycling for the collection, transportation and sorting of Hull’s kerbside collected dry recyclable waste."
"Since contract commencement on 1st April 2014, J&B have provided an uninterrupted service ensuring reliability of collection from our waste transfer station and a high quality waste sorting solution for Hull’s fully commingled dry recyclable waste stream."
"During the first half of the contract we quickly developed a partnership approach to working which enabled a significant improvement in material quality including compaction levels, moisture content and a reduction in contamination levels. This joint working helped to educate the residents of Hull and has resulted in improved quality and revenue share for both parties throughout the contract."
"The contract is characterised by a desire to tackle problems together and is based on a mutual understanding of each party’s needs, which we believe is key to creating such a positive and effective working relationship."
The other contracts involve the processing of garden and kitchen waste from approximately 263,000 homes across both the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. Biowise process approximately 60,000 tonnes per year of organic waste for J&B Bio, which is converted into quality compost for use in horticulture and agriculture.
It has been clear from day one that there is a lot of synergies between J&B Recycling and Biowise and that has helped J&B Bio to deliver a competitive solutiontom the councils based around quality, expertise and price
James Landau, Managing Director of Biowise stated : "We are delighted to be working with J&B Bio to deliver these waste contracts. By doing so we can continue to support the local economy, keeping jobs secure and creating more opportunities alongside providing a quality waste management service."
Biowise processes the organic waste, at its IVC (in vessel composting) facility, in Willerby near Hull. The councils collect the organic waste in their bin wagons and deliver it to three transfer stations across the region and also direct deliver into the Biowise facility. J&B Bio collects in bulk from the transfer station for processing at Willerby.
J&B Recycling continually work with our clients to ensure that their contracts are working efficiently and economically for them. The above results were well-deserved for Hull City Council and J&B Bio are looking forward to continuing our excellent relationship with them seeing even better results in future.
